Food and Stuff

So I was roaming the Internet today and I came upon this...

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/11/pizza-is-still-officially-a-vegetable.php

It is post about the US senate passing a bill that counts pizza sauce as a vegetable in a stroke of brilliance to make school lunches more healthy.  This is a move that the USA is well known for.  Back in the 80's the government declared ketchup a vegetable to keep funding for the Star wars program going.

The post got me thinking about some of the crazy "foods" I have eaten and thought were OK at the time.  Now looking back they were either odd or just mistakes.

1. Ichiban Noodle Casserole
++
While at university I was on a budget.  I still managed to have the above "foods" in my dorm room.  Careful shopping was probably the reason.  When hungry on a weekend evening and too lazy to go find fast food, I would plug in my hot pot and mix up the above tasty concoction.  With the various flavors of salt that come with the noodles there are quite a few different versions of this tasty mess that you can make.

Looking back I don't know how much of this can be called food.  It filled me and didn't taste terrible,but that's as far as it went.

2. Peanut Butter and Onion Sandwich
+

I came upon this concoction while in high school.  I think my motivation was similar to when I tried Haggis so many years later.  I took it as a dare and a challenge.  I ate it more than once because I didn't want to share my snack with my sisters.  I have issues.  I know.  The flavor here was surprisingly good.   Not something I would have all the time...in fact I haven't eaten this since grade 11, but it was snack choice for at least a half dozen times.

3. Wonder Bread and Cheese Puffs
+

I don't know what I was thinking. This might have been my eating low.  I was hungry and the idea of just eating a piece of bread or a handful of cheese puffs was insufficient to me.  Putting the two together was a stroke of brilliance. At least I thought so at the time.  The "cheese" flavour of the puffs went well with the chemical purity of the wonder bread.  There isn't anything here that is technically food but it was the flavor and full stomach that I was going for.  I late bought cheese whiz and this sandwich became obsolete.  That is probably a good thing.

Luckily I moved out of the dorms and got married.  Fixing meals like this became unacceptable (though I have never tried).  I learned to cook and now that I can afford real ingredients the things I make are both tasty and can qualify as food.

At least I think they can...
